Ankle pain physiotherapy Physiotherapy for Ankle Pain

There are various causes of ankle pain, but ankle sprains are one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries. Sprains are stretching or tearing injuries of the ligaments of the ankle, usually as a result of sudden over stretching. They can occur on either or both of the ligaments on the inside or outside of the ankle joint, but most commonly it is the outside or lateral ligaments that are injured. Ankle sprains more commonly happen when there is a pre-existing muscle weakness in the ankle or a history of previous ankle injuries. An injury typically occurs when the ankle is suddenly twisted during sports or by stepping off an uneven surface. Ligament injuries are graded from I to III, ranging from partial to complete tears. Partial tears retain some ankle stability, whereas complete tears lose stability. X-rays can determine whether there is an accompanying break.
